Early Life & Family
Shah Rukh Khan was born on 2 November 1965 in a Muslim family in New Delhi. He spent the first five years of his life in Mangalore where his maternal grandfather, Iftikhar Ahmed, served as the chief engineer of the port in the 1960s. Khan's father, Mir Taj Muhammad Khan, was an Indian freedom activist from Peshawar who campaigned with Khudai Khittgar, led by Abdul Ghaffar Khan (also known as Bacha Khan or "Frontier Gandhi"). led a non-violent resistance movement that sought a unified and independent state. Mir was a follower of Abdul Ghaffar Khan, and associated with the Indian National Congress. As of 2010, Khan's ancestral family still resided in Shah Wali Qatal, Qissa Khawani Bazar area of Peshawar. Mir moved to New Delhi after the partition of India in 1948. Khan's mother Latif Fatima was the daughter of a senior government engineer.
Shah Rukh Khan's parents were married in 1959. Khan described himself on Twitter as "half Hyderabadi (mother), half Pathan (father) and part Kashmiri (grandmother)". According to Khan, his grandfather, Mir Jan Muhammad Khan, was originally from Afghanistan. His cousins in Peshawar claim that the family speaks Hindi and is originally from Kashmir, denying the claim that his grandfather was from Afghanistan.
Shah Rukh Khan grew up in the Rajendranagar neighbourhood of New Delhi. His father had several business ventures, including a restaurant, and the family lived a middle-class life in rented apartments. Shah Rukh Khan initially aspired to pursue a career in sports, but a shoulder injury in the early years prevented him from playing any more. His father died of cancer in 1981 and his mother died of complications from diabetes in 1991. After the death of his parents, his older sister, Shahnaz Lal Rukh (born 1960), became depressed and Shah Rukh Khan took over his care. Shahnaz lives with his brother and his family in a mansion in Mumbai.
Although Shah Rukh Khan was given the birth name Shah Rukh Khan, he prefers to write his name as Shah Rukh Khan, and is usually referred to by the initials SRK. Acting Career
Shah Rukh Khan's first acting role was in Lekh Tandon's television series Dil Dariya, which began shooting in 1988, but due to production delays, the 1989 series Fuji directed by Rajkumar Kapoor was replaced by television. In the series, which depicted the training of army cadets in a realistic manner, he played the lead role of Abhimanyu Roy.
In 1997, he starred in Subhash Ghai's diasporic-themed social drama Pardes, portraying Arjun, a musician facing a moral dilemma.
2004 was a critically and commercially successful year for Khan. He changed Dreams Unlimited to Red Chillies Entertainment, adding his wife Gauri as a producer. In the company's first production, he starred in the Masala film Hoon Naa directed by Farah Khan. A fictitious account of India-Pakistan relations, it was seen by some observers as a conscious attempt to break away from stereotypes of Pakistan as the perennial villain.
In 2013, Khan starred in Rohit Shetty's action comedy Chennai Express for Red Chillies Entertainment, although the film was a tribute to Tamil cinema star Rajinikanth.
In Rahul Dholakia's action crime film Raees (2017), Khan plays the titular anti-hero - a bootlegger turned gangster in 1980s Gujarat. In a generally mixed review, Pratham D. Gupta of The Telegraph thought Khan's performance "at times conflicted, intense and full of power, but often out of character with the usual stock demeanour".
After the release of Zero, Khan took a four-year hiatus from full-time acting that was partly caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in India. He will star in three films in 2023: Yash Raj Films' Pathan, co-starring Deepika Padukone and John Abraham Jawaan, where he will play a dual role, and Rajkumar Hirani's Dinky alongside Taapsee Pannu.
